Seemingly lost from the radar in the UK are the class 58's in Spain, which on one trip all twelve in Spain were found, here, at ADIF Monforte Del Cid, Alicante, we find eight of the class 58's.

All these examples are in the Transfesa arm of DBSchenker, so not even recorded on the UK system, so, and with a lot thanks to a local friend named Andy, the 'invisible' locomotives were found.

These are 58015, 58020, 58024, 58029, 58030, 58031, 58043 and 58047.

Of note 58031 is now named, with a UK style nameplate 'Caballero Ferroviario' in English 'Knight Rail' A few of the fleet have gained depot stickers and they all now carry Continental Rail livery, with some slight variations here and there. Most of the class were exported in GIF livery, so by all means, not too many photos of these about.

They last worked in late 2012 on the Albacete - Alicante LAV, and have been stored since then, with possible LAV routes from Albacete to Valencia and from Alicante to Murcia, who knows if they'll be out again building high speed lines.

All by all means lucky survivors, particularly 58043, this one was stood down at some point after 2006 at the ADIF Albacete base but was revived in late 2011/early 2012 for reuse.

As is typical in Spain, the sun was out and beaming down in the Nevada like landscape to which is what the British 58's now call home.

The locomotive numbers and Spanish identities are included below;

58015 - N/A (never applied)
58020 - L43
58024 - L42
58029 - L44
58030 - L46
58031 - L45
58043 - L37 (also carries number; 93.71.13.52.543-3)
58047 - L51

Export dates for these vary with 58041 and 58043 leaving the UK in April 2003. 58020, 58024, 58025, 58029, 58030 and 58031 leaving in May 2004 and 58015, 58027, 58047 and 58050 being exported in early 2008.

Many thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like the photos and also that these would prove useful. Who knows with some luck they will see work and maybe one day return to the UK. For now their with you in a normally sunny Spain.

Thanks again,

Michael
